Welcome
Welcome To The Inaugural Friends of Hooven Forest Newsletter!
Please forward this newsletter to your friends and neighbors. We want to get the word out about our effort to save Hooven Forest and recruit more volunteers! Saving Hooven Forest will be a big project, and we can use all the help we can get.
If you are receiving this email from a friend or neighbor, you can sign up to receive your own copy of the Friends of Hooven Forest Newsletter in your inbox by visiting our website, https://hoovenforest.org. Please make sure to add our email address, info@hoovenforest.org to your contact list or address book, so our emails don't go into your spam folder.
Our goal is to send regular updates via this Newsletter, but we promise not to overload your inbox. Right now, we will be committing to a monthly newsletter, but will be communicating more frequently as needed.
Who Are The Friends of Hooven Forest?
We are a small group of concerned neighbors organizing ourselves to try and save 180+ acre Hooven Forest (also known as the Crystal Lake DNR Parcel), located just over the King County line in Snohomish County. There is a risk of this land becoming developed for residential or commercial use, and we would like to conserve it for the community and environment. You can find out more about our Steering Committee on our website.
How Can You Help?
The Friends of Hooven Forest has identified several roles we think we will need to help move this project forward. If you have skills in any of these areas, and are willing to help, or are interested in participating in any other capacity, please contact us by emailing us at info@hoovenforest.org.
We need a Communications/Social Media Manager to help us set up a few key social media accounts, write articles for local newspapers, manage our press contacts and generally get the word out.
We need someone to help us identify, reach out to and manage our relationships with Elected Officials (the Department of Natural Resources, Snohomish County Council, Snohomish County Parks, Washington State Senator and Representatives, relevant Federal officials and beyond).
We need help with establishing our organization as a 501c3 non-profit and/or to help us reach out to established conservation or other non-profits so we can begin raising funds to help us with our first step toward an assessment of the value of this property.
We would love to recruit help from someone with experience in writing conservation grants, so we can eventually put together enough funding to place this parcel into some sort of conservation status.
We will most likely need legal representation to review contracts and other documents, preferably someone with experience in real estate, community organizing and/or conservation.
Please email us at info@hoovenforest.org if you are interested in volunteering in any role.
Help Elect Dave Upthegrove as WA State Lands Commissioner
In the very short term, you can help our effort by voting on November 5, 2024 and helping the campaign of Dave Upthegrove for Washington State Lands Commissioner (D). Dave is a King County Council member and former state lawmaker. He has made his position clear: he wants to preserve more legacy forests like Hooven Forest, and will "update the state's policy to protect these legacy forests from logging." (WA lands commissioner candidates debate, Seattle Times, September 19, 2024). His opponent, Republican Jamie Herrera Buetler, is skeptical of setting aside these legacy lands. You can learn more about Dave, his positions on legacy forests like Hooven Forest, and other issues at https://upthegrove.org/.
Dave only won his primary fight by 49 votes. There is a good chance this will be a close election, so please consider donating, door-knocking - and of course voting - for Dave Upthegrove for Washington State Lands Commissioner.
Thank you for reading our Newsletter, and we hope to hear from you soon!
